Congratulations !Good work. You've made it through the first level of web development training. In fact, you should be able to put up some respectable pages. You should make yourself very comfortable with the fundamentals you've learned in this course of tutorials. They form the foundation of HTML: Text, Links, Images. Below are a set of exercises for you to try before trying to create the Final Exam Page. The Exams on this site will be pages that you will be asked to duplicate. Don't worry if you don't get them right on your first try or it takes you a long time to complete them. That's what they're for. They're as much of a learning tool as a testing tool. The most important function of the exam pages is to let you know if you're ready to move on or you need to review certain areas. You are not doing yourself a favor by jumping ahead when you haven't mastered the fundamentals. I've found that most of the discouragement suffered when learning web technologies is due to the fact that one tiny fact or basic technique was not thoroughly understood and the student moves forward instead of reviewing his problem. Master one thing before moving on. And, don't be afraid to ask for help. Text ExercisesMake headers and paragraphs using various ALIGN values. Make a single level grocery list. I recommend that you copy and paste some bulk text onto your page to save a lot of typing. Download my zipped text about zipping files to get some bulk text. Use <blockquote> and <pre> to present text along with your regular paragraphs. Italicize and embolden at least a dozen words in your <p>s, <blockquote>s, and lists. And, don't forget to make some horizontal rules to section off your pages, use a BGCOLOR and a TEXT color. Linking ExercisesRepeat the exercises from Lesson 12. Make three or four pages and interlink them in various directory (folder) structures. Get comfortable with linking up, down, and up & down different folder heirarchies. Be sure you can open a link in a new window using TARGET="_blank". Image ExercisesWork with different sized images. Get images from free clipart sites. It's important to get familiar with good sources of images. Check out the Downloads Page for links to some clip art sites. For exam pages, you can just right click and save the images from the sample page. Position images to the left, right and center. Get text to flow around left and right aligned images. Make some image links while you're at it and play around with BORDERs. Use images to make BACKGROUNDs and make at least one "fixed" background using BGPROPERTIES="fixed". Remember this only works in Internet Explorer. Spend an evening reviewing the above and going back over tutorials and then try out the Final Exam. |
